Using secure microcontrollers to protect intellectual property
Maxim Integrated Products, Inc.

As embedded systems become more complex, the software that drives those systems becomes a valuable part of a company's intellectual property (IP). Although critically important, all too often this software is not stored securely. The contents of a standard flash or SRAM IC can easily be extracted and copied. Microcontrollers with internal memory often have bootloaders or debug engines that provide easy access to the software. Once the software is stolen, the value of the IP is greatly diminished. Then it would be easy for a competitor to create cloned devices for sale at lower prices. Maxim Integrated Products manufactures secure microcontrollers that feature secure communication channels, protect software IP, and even detect an attack. This talk discusses microcontroller features that guarantee security without limiting the versatility of the device. Examples will show how the microcontrollers can be used to protect IP.

Off-chip ESD protection solution for high-speed interfaces
Semtech International AG

An electrostatic discharge (ESD) paradox is seen across the semiconductor industry. Increasing demands for processing speed and functional density have pushed IC (Integrated Circuit) fabricators to further shrink the minimum dimensions of MOS devices, making the next generation electronics devices even more susceptible to ESD events. Meanwhile, the Industry Council on ESD Target Levels recently announced the reduction of the standard level of on-chip ESD protection to facilitate the industry's ability to design and quickly bring to market high-speed and high-performance ICs. Hence, the need to protect systems with even more robust off-chip ESD protection circuits is greater than ever. A wide variety of technologies have emerged as contenders for ESD protections, TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) is proven to be the best candidate after considering all the aspects.

DisplayPort, as a specific example, is the emerging high speed digital interface for both internal and external interconnects related to PC. At 2.7Gbps/lane, capacitive loadings can easily degrade the high speed signals. Therefore, it is very important to choose adequate protection schemes that the system passes ESD test per IEC61000-4-2 standard while meeting the DisplayPort Compliance Test Specification (CTS) requirement.

Crest factor reduction and digital pre-distortion - A comprehensive basestation solution
Optichron, Inc.

Crest Factor Reduction (CFR) and Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD) offer solutions for basestation (BTS) designers by providing lower PAR signals and correcting signal nonlinearities, to improve performance while lowering cost and operating costs through improved power efficiency.

Power efficiency is a key factor: it limits signal power, power transistors are expensive, power is the largest operational expense, and power dissipation impacts system size.

The power amplifier (PA) consumes most of the power and is relatively inefficient. To eliminate spurious emissions, designers must operate the PA in a more linear but less efficient regime. DPD increases the PA output linearity by pre-distorting the signal, correcting nonlinearities to allow more efficient operation. The peak to average ratio (PAR) of the signal can also cause distortion requiring PA backoff and lower efficiency. CFR lowers the PAR so the PA can be operated in a more efficient regime, closer to saturation. While both CFR and DPD deliver increased efficiency, the combined solution delivers a far more optimal result.
